from that among normal controls and patients with osteoarthritis. Immobility per se does not seem to be a primary factor as the patients with osteoarthritis did not show an increased prevalence compared with the control group. Certain medical conditions, including pure iron deficiency, uraemia, pregnancy, gastrectomy, and carcinoma, are associated with the syndrome, providing potential clues about its mechanism.3 Interestingly, these conditions lead to either pure iron deficiency or anaemia of chronic disease, and anaemic patients experience more severe symptoms.4 As patients with rheumatoid arthritis characteristically develop the anaeniia of chronic disease the increased prevalence of the syndrome observed in the group with rheumatoid arthritis may relate to this secondary complication.5 The combination of the restless leg syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis contributes considerably to discomfort and anxiety, and in our experience few doctors are aware of this condition.

Prolonged Q-T interval following astemizole overdose.

Astemizole overdose has been reported to cause torsades-de-pointes and in the present case it caused prolongation of the Q-T interval. Astemizole overdoses should be managed in a similar way to overdose with other cardiotoxic drugs.

Prolonged QT Risk Assessment in Antipsychotic Overdose Using the QT Nomogram.

STUDY OBJECTIVE Antipsychotic drugs are frequently reported to cause QT prolongation and torsade de pointes. We aim to investigate the potential risk of torsade de pointes in antipsychotic overdose by assessing the QT interval with the QT nomogram. METHODS All presentations to a toxicology service between January 1987 and May 2013 were reviewed. Admissions with single ingestions of an antipsy...

Prevention of torsade de pointes in the congenital long QT syndrome: use of a pause prevention pacing algorithm.

Torsade de pointes in the congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS) is often pause dependent. Thus, the main goal of pacemaker treatment in the LQTS may be the prevention of pauses that facilitate the onset of torsade de pointes. A pause prevention pacing algorithm (rate smoothing) was used for arrhythmia prevention in a 14 year old girl with congenital LQTS. By temporarily increasing the pacing rate ...
